Saw Palmetto

Postby girlintrouble » Wed Nov 23, 2016 10:41 pm

Hi there ladies
I guess this post can be my introduction
Ill keep it brief
Diagnosed age 18
Now 49
Very severe hirsutism, controlled with laser /IPL
Tried Dianette, Cyproterone Acetate years ago but made no difference so stopped
Had regular periods for many years now but now getting irregular due to impending menopause I guess
Probably at least 3 stone over weight but I carry it well lol.

So for me the biggest problem was the excess hair, didnt try to have children and never expected to be skinny, hate pharmaceutical medication, usually has side effects...

About 3 months back I went on a Ketogenic diet (Low carb, high fat) have lost over a stone.
But I have noticed my hair is thinning, perhaps I should have been more careful about taking vitamins which I will be more careful of now

In my research Ive seen ladies are taking Saw Palmetto to block DHT.
Now Im happy to try it. I am just wondering if this will result in a loss of sex drive? Ive always assumed Ive had a healthy interest perhaps due to my higher testosterone levels.

Any feedback on if anyone is taking it, had it helped with the PCOS, hirsutism. Male Pattern Baldness or sex drive

Are you still having laser for maintenance for the hair - Ive had about 22 sessions now on my face, not been back for 3 years now and need another top up as some are sprouting back.

I am on the combined contraceptive which helps slow down the growth, their is a cream called vaniqa which can slow down the growth further but is expensive so isnt often mentioned by the GP. It can take a few months to work. I am 47 and still on the combined pill as well (2 stone overweight from my 20s but think an extra stone is ok for my age, just need to shift the 1 stone). I really like the 5:2 diet as I find it really easy (once I get my brain around it), cheap and works, but saying that I find being on the contraceptive makes it easier to lose weight as well.

Yes need laser maintenance treatments after a few years, for ladies with PCOS it will unlikely disappear permanently
Yes a stone over isnt too bad but obviously better to lose something.

Anyone taking the Saw Palmetto?
