Mother of recently diagnosed

Postby Caketin10 » Mon Nov 02, 2015 9:29 pm

Hello, my daughter was diagnosed just a few months ago aged 16. She'd visited the GP because she was having irregular periods and suffering debilitating period pain. The GP ran blood tests, I was unable to go with her to get the results so her grandmother went along. They diagnosed PCOS. Prescribed her the pill gave her a leaflet and that was it. She had bad acne and has excessive body hair especially on her neck and lower back which we read can be associated with PCOS. the pill has helped regulate her periods and made them lighter and shorter? However recently the pain is becoming unbearable again, she's been back to the GP who gave her ibuprofen and basically told her to get on with it. I don't feel we've been given enough info or direction about PCOS, so looking for some advice? If we go back to the GP I want to be able to ask the right questions?

Thanks in advance.

I would ask to be referred to an endocrinologist as pcos is there area, pain generally isn't a pcos symptom but it is for endometriosis and there is a link between endo and pcos, get her also to take 3 months of the pill back to back as it reduces the symptoms so as long as she has 3-4 periods a year then that is ok. Also look at the NICE guidelines as it advises what to know when it comes to pcos - unfortunately a lot of gps tie everything with pcos and it is t always just pcos!
