PCOS getting worse

Postby sjc » Mon Feb 23, 2015 10:18 pm

Hi
I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17. I have never had any treatment for it but always had chin hairs and rarely have a period.

In the last year my symptoms have been the worst they have ever been. The hair on my face has got thicker and my skin is appalling (spotty and greasy).

I have managed to maintain my weight in the past (I have a labrador that keeps me active) but in the last year and a bit I have gone from a size 10 to a 14 and I am still gaining weight. I feel miserable, I hate going outside and I don't really socialise anymore.

How do you deal with it? Is there anything you would recommend taking or doing to help with the symptoms?

The combined contraceptive can help keep the weight manageable, problem is the fatter you get the worse the symptoms can be. Eat little and often and cut out all the white carbs and as much sugar as poss. Ive actually just started the 5:2 diet (I am not diabetic or insulin resistant) and have lost 11lb in 4 weeks (well 6 weeks but was unwell for a few weeks so didnt do it). It is easier than I thought it would be as I was dreading it especially as I am so used to eating little and often.

You must make sure you have 3-4 periods a year to ensure your uterus stays healthy, you can get medication to force it.

Thank you for reply. I heard about the 5:2 diet but wasn't sure if I could do it. I will look in to it further. I cut out sugar from my tea, I think my biggest problem is I have moved back in with my parents while completing a masters. When alone I only buy wholemeal carbs and my parents only eat white and I have been eating their meals. Thinking back to yesterdays dinner (pasta) I was hungry an hour later.

I will book an appointment with my doctor and see if I can get the combined contraceptive and see if it helps.
