Lower abdominal pain when exercising?

Postby gracie83 » Mon May 05, 2014 7:48 am

Hello,

Just a quick question as I am unsure if this is PCOS related or not (my doctor very helpfully has no idea and says to stop exercising!).

Does anyone else have bad period type pain when then are doing high intensity exercising? For me it starts around 10 minutes into a workout (running or Combat/Attack class). It really feels like extreme period pain and the pain comes from the same location. It lasts for around 10 mins and then just disappears. You cannot stop exercising as the pain is actually worse if you stop!

I can happily exercise at low intensity (Yoga or pilates) without pain. It doesn't seem to follow any pattern with relation to my cycles (but then again I have PCOS so I don't know where in my cycle I am most of the time!) It is putting a dent into the pleasure I get from going to class - they are tough enough without 10 mins of pain to work through!

Anyway just curious if anyone else has the same!

Thanks

My only query I suppose is whether you need to stretch that area perhaps, I did hard exercise but didn't get it, it may be worth lying on the floor before a class and twist your body (so arms one side and legs the other way) to try and stretch out the tum area, both sides. It sounds to me like something is cramping up and then eases off. What sort of exercise are you doing, is it the same particular stretch or bit of exercise that you are getting it on?

I do all the stretching before hand. I mostly do high impact aerobics classes - Body combat (lots of punching and kicking for an hour) and Body attack (insane aerobics lots of burpees, leaping about and running!) It happens when I am running on the treadmill too. I have been googling this some more and it seems to affect women when they hit the first cardio high peak of the workout (which is the same for me - 10 mins in is when the warm up is over and the hard work begins and never during low impact yoga or swimming) Have read theories ranging from endemetroisis/tilted uterus/ovarian cysts/eating time/blood flow being restricted to abdomen area etc the only thing in common is that the doctors don't seem to know!

Just thought it was worth asking as most problems/pain in my life seem to be linked to PCOS somehow! The first time it happened I was convinced a cyst had gone bang again it was a similar level of pain!

I would ask to be sent to an endocrinologist so they can check out the possibility of endometriosis (can only be diagnosed by a laparoscopy), don't let the gp fob you off, you need to get it investigated further.

please do not go to an endocrinologist to rule out endometriosis you need to see a gynae who specialises in endometriosis. i saw an endocrinologist and they said i didn't have endo but when i saw proper specialist i was riddled. pm me if you need help finding someone.
had the lot pcos endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids. now in early surgical menopause.

Thanks for replies. The endometriosis is a distinct possibility as my sister has the same problem. It happened again at the gym this morning. Seriously painful! Had to abandon the class and just doubled up in the toilets waiting for the pain to go. Then it goes and I am back to bouncing around with the rest of the class! It could also be period related as period is due in a week (or so). Oh well back to doctors again!
