Recently diagnosed, wondering about TBG thyroid links?

Postby Lozy89 » Sat Feb 22, 2014 10:34 am

After a scan this week I have been diagnosed with PCOS. I'm waiting for my first doctors appointment.

I have been telling my doctor that something feels wrong for nearly 5 years now, and this is the first time I have actually started to get somewhere. The problem I have is that not all of my symptoms appear to be PCOS related. I have weight gain, and my periods became irregular a little over 2 years ago. However I also struggle with anxiety and depression, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, an inability to concentrate have developed eczema. At the beginning of this my doctor was worried and ran a lot of tests. But my basic thyroid screen came back normal. I was therefore diagnosed with a mental health problem.

I have spent 4 years throwing my heart and soul into therapy, CBT and medications, to no effect. It wasn't until I started seeing a new therapist recently who suggested further medical testing that PCOS was identified. She feels my mental health is a symptom of something else.

My question is this. Do other people with PCOS get these symptoms? And has anyone ever had a complication from PCOS affecting TBG thyroid levels? I have read that this is possible, and that this issue will not show on the standard thyroid screen I had. Combined with PCOS it explains all of my symptoms. I could just use some support or advice. After nearly 5 years of my doctor telling me I'm fine I've lost the nerve to stand up for myself about this. I feel like a hypochondriac!

Thanks all.

Yes to weight gain, yes to depression and anxiety and yes to tiredness..... I believe we can be deficient in Vitamin D which can add to the tiredness so make sure your diet is good and try and find some sun as well as that always helps :-) Are you on a combined contraceptive pill as this can help with the weight gain, depression and anxiety to a degree as it tends to level out your moods more. Have you seen an endocrinologist about the PCOS side of things as they may be able to help further as unfortunately GP's do not understand the extend of PCOS (and tend to just say its a fertility issue and its so much wider than that).

Do you know why you felt depressed/anxious ? I presume you have tried anti depressants, did they help at all? For me AD's made a huge difference and did help with the anxiety as well, Im ok now but wouldn't hesitate to go back on them if I have a prolonged 'black' phase.

And don't feel embarrassed about pushing your GP as there are their to help you, so you should never feel like you are being a pain or hypochondriac, PCOS symptoms can be vast and unfortunately even though it is pretty common, a lot do not realise how many are connected to the condition.

Thanks, it's just nice to hear from someone who doesn't think I've gone a bit mad! I am on the pill and have been for years, I've always got on well with it so I will stick with this.

I was on anti depressants for about 18 months which did help to level me out somewhat. The onset of my sympyoms linned up pretty nicely with some fairly horrendous events in my life, which the doctor (understandably i guess) latched on to. it wasnt until i started to realise i wasnt unhappy about anything impartigular any more that i got concerned. Nothing I did appart from the ad's seemed to help. However I have MASSIVE libido problems. This put a huge amount of pressure on my relationship, and to be honest, with no answers at the time it nearly ended things for me and my partner. The gp thought this was a combination of depression and a side effect of the ad's and do recommended coming off them, but there was NO improvement at all. I'm now wondering if this is another possible symptom?

I think I will push for the extra blood work. I feel like I have a right to answers now. One way or another I would like to know, probably more for my own sanity at this point! I will also ask about access to specialists. I live in the Channel Islands and we don't have the NHS so this would probably be a good love for me anyway. I've seen some great advice on here about how important diet can be so I think I will start working in this now.

Honestly, this forum is great. Feeling more confident about this than I have in years! :-)

It may also be worth changing the type of combined pill you are as some can really affect your libido as well so that may be contributing to it. I used to have black times when I was younger and there was no real reason for it and I now know that it is due to PCOS, so perhaps the bad moments in your life did cause depression to a degree but we are prone to it because of PCOS and they are doing research into why/how it contributes. We are all a little mad I reckon, but who wants to be normal eh!!

Exactly!

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm seeing the GP later in the week so just got to get my head into gear and start getting my answers. Think I'm going to write all of this down so I go in there ready.

Good luck to all the other newbies I've seen posting lately!
