I have looked into this in my more negative moments and it takes a couple of years to get through all the courses, checking etc. You may then get a little one fairly soon or have to wait for years. Most agencies try to ensure there is no more than a 40 year age gap (so a 44 year old is unlikely to be offered a child below 4 years). be warned though that there are very few babies about.
Have a look at some websites,

http://www.barnardos.org.uk/fosteringandadoption.htm
http://www.actionforchildren.org.uk/con ... goryID=186
http://www.baaf.org.uk/
http://www.bemyparent.org.uk/

And of course your local authority.

I would spend time researching this so you know the best place to go for you. 29 is still young so you have a few years yet!
