Experiences of est low birth weight?

Postby youlemming » Sun Jun 21, 2015 8:36 pm

Hi, had 34 wk check with midwife on Friday and measured 31wks which is 10th percentile so was sent for a growth scan today.
Was nearly on 90th line at 28 wk check so she wanted to have it confirmed as tape measurements are not always accurate.

Unit was busy and there was only 1 midwife so after a quick chat about what was being checked I went off for the scan. Bubs is very active so took a while to get measurements, only one that has dropped off the line compared with 24 wk scan was the abdomen from just above to just below the 50th.
Fluid a little low but still within normal limits and blood flow in placenta was good.

But once back in the assessment unit midwife said estimated birth weight was 2.2kg(5lb) so 10th percentile and I need to be seen again in the clinic within the next week and they will call with an appointment.
As she was literally running from room to room there was no real details on what the concern was or which particular set of measurements were giving this est figure.
Poor woman was on the phone a number of times asking for extra staff so didn't feel like I could ask for more as she was quite flustered with the limited info she did give.
I can barely read the notes so no real clues there either!

My first was a healthy 7lb 14 so I am surprised this one is small, has anyone else been predicted small but had an avg or larger size baby?

After being on the 90th at the first measurement I was worried about having a 9lb plus baby not the opposite!

Hi, I never had any size worries, but was convinced baby was breech so insisted on a scan at 36+4. Turned out she was definitely breech but what worried them more was they decided she was about 3lb 5oz (can't quite remember) from the scan, so made me go straight in for a c section at 37 weeks as she was not growing anymore. Turned out she was 4lb 11oz, so small but nowhere near as small as they predicted. Those scan measurements are not accurate at all so please don't worry. I had a horrendous weekend of worry thinking I had a 3lb-er heading my way and there was no need to panic at all.

I hope you get some clarity from your next appointment, please don't panic! Lots of luck x

i was regularly monitored due to growth issue in previous pregnancy ( IRGU) i found the scan more accurate than tape measure. As you are 34 wks and placenta bloodflow good i would assume they will monitor you weekly for next few weeks whereby baby will grow ? I was also measuring 5 lbs at 34 weeks and had the baby 38 +5 and was 5 lbs 11- so not that small.

Remember size is also dependent on parents size and some babies are just small as their parents are small.

Good luck X

Thanks for your replies, didn't hear from the clinic today to get an appointment as the midwife said I would so going to call the assessment unit tomorrow and follow it up.

Both myself and OH are not small people both 5ft 9 and of sturdy build and DD1 was 7lb 14 at birth and at 5 is the size of a 7 yr old so really surprised to be measuring small.

Just want to get things cleared up as now I'm not sure if 5lb is the current est weight or est birth weight reading back through the notes, just can't stand the not knowing what's going on!

I went into labour at 36 weeks for no reason ad DD was 5lb 4oz....so probably would have been less than 5lb at 34 weeks. I had a growth scan and they had no concerns about her size. I guess the issue is always if they are smaller but gaining weight. Told me they gain 1/2 a lb a week in these weeks xxxx

Hi, Consultant today cleared things up a bit which is good.

5lb is current estimated weight which to me doesn't sound that bad when they could pull on up to 1/2 lb a week from now, so could easier get into the 7lb's.

Didn't scan today so too close to the last one to see any really difference so go back in 2 wks, if she still on or goes above the 10th percentile then will continue to monitor but if it does look like the trend is dropping then they will induce as will be 37 wks by then.
Said it could be that the 28wk measurement which put me closer to the 90th line was wrong and she may have always been on the smaller end of the scale, now just a waiting game to see what happens in 2 wks!
