Peri-natal depression/mental health support

Postby Taj0112 » Tue Feb 18, 2014 2:18 pm

Hi everyone

I was wondering what support people got if they had existing mental health issues/depression etc? I know some areas have specialist mental health midwives so I'm hoping to get one of those. I'm bipolar and am just heading into another bout of depression, which seems even more scary given I'm supposed to be over the moon right now (clearly part of me is).

I just wanted to know if anyone else struggled at all, what helped and what support they received?

Thanks!

T xx

Hi Taj,

Sorry to hear you are going through another bout, I really feel for you. I have just come out of a bad bout of depression myself. I am planning in going through FET in August this year. My meds have just been changed by my psychiatrist and I know they will probably want me to go on something else but these are the only ones that have made such a difference. I discussed this with my psychiatrist and she has referred me to the local perinatal unit to discuss my medication for when I go through my treatment. Maybe go to see your psychiatrist for some guidance as you will need some support.

Best if luck, letme know how it goes.

Thanks Lolly. Sorry to hear you have been suffering again. I'm going to see the perinatal obstetrician but she won't fiddle with my meds. I can probably have an anti depressant added but am already on other bits which are more risky to babies. I guess my health is important too. Good you have been referred!
