BFP- Confusing scan *****UPDATE*****

Postby Smashing Pumpkins » Wed Jan 08, 2014 10:38 pm

Hi ladies! Long time lurker, first time poster here :)
My story is a bit confusing so I do apologise if I ramble on a bit.
My OH and I have been TTC for 5 years with no luck. After the shock of my life (a BFP on NYE!) I asked for an early scan at my local hospital because I was getting sharp pains in my right side/fever. The ultrasound showed a gestational sac measuring 14.6mm. Nothing else was seen, so a transvaginal scan was done which showed a yolk sac. Nurse wasn't concerned, said all looked normal but didn't mention anything about dates, how far along I was (I'm reckoning 5-6 weeks if I ovulated right) and said no fetal pole was seen. She's bringing me in for another scan on the 14th of this month. Could it simply be too early to see anything? Yolk sac was only picked up on internal exam so does this mean I'm very early?
The no fetal pole is ringing alarm bells-could this be a miscarriage/blighted ovum or missed miscarriage?
I'm sorry for all the questions but nurse wasn't very helpful. Also, last week I had intense nausea to the point I couldn't eat and my breasts were so sore. For the last three days the nausea has entirely disappeared and my boobs aren't half as bad, so I'm a panicky lol
If anyone could shed any light at all on any of these issues, or share their own stories it would be so helpful

I think it sounds normal for such an early scan so try not to worry, you should hopefully see a heart beat next time. Don't analyse the symptoms or you will go mad, they can come and go. And congratulations by the way ...

What you've seen is normal for that gestation. I've had a scan between 5-6 weeks and only been able to see a sac and nothing else, and 2 weeks later a tiny tiny baby with a heartbeat.

Transvaginal scans were so normal for me during treatment, that I always had them in the early stages of pregnancy, and probably til the end of the first trimester. At that stage everything is so small. Congratulations and wish you a H&H pregnancy - what a nice start to the new year!

Hi I had an early scan as well which merely showed the sac and nothing else and then like said before within 2 weeks a tiny peanut sized baby was seen. Hope it all works out well and you have a sticky one. xxx

Hi ladies!
Thank you for all your kind words and wishes.
Went for my scan- within 3 seconds the nurse turned the screen round and there was my little bean with it's heartbeat flickering away! Burst into tears on the spot.
At my previous scan, the other nurse said the gestational sac looked to be around 6 weeks 2 days, hence why I panicked, but at this scan I was told at the time of the first scan I would've been just over 5 weeks and that's why nothing was seen! So the first nurse dated me wrong. I am now 7w 3d and feeling positive :)
Hugs to all

Yey great news - now try and relax a bit (not that you do when your pregnant or when baby arrives)!
