ttc #2 - metformin query.

Postby bluejemima » Fri Dec 12, 2014 7:15 am

Hi,

We're trying to conceive number 2.
I am 34, diagnosed with PCOS in 2007. Sucessful natural pregnancy in 2011 after 12 months ttc and taking agnus castus. Now been ttc number 2 for 15months. Last time I took basal body temp and could see a pattern even though periods themselves were not regular or monthly. This time my last normal period was in May this yr. I had a month long bleed in October this yr (possibly an early miscarriage). Since then no period and bbt erratic since May. Doc has done standard blood test and on the back of specialist declining my referal based on the fact I do have a son (which is bloomin amazing), I have PCOS diagnosis and my dh is not ready to get his fertility tested - I'm working on that one - doc has prescribed me Metformin.

I do not have high blood sugar levels indicated by blood test, and am not overweight (work hard at eating as close a low GI paleo type diet as possible). I know metformin changes how bodies process insulin and glucose, however does altering this in turn alter progesterone and testosterone levels? Anyone else taken metformin with the hope of conceiving even if blood sugar levels are within the normal range?

I have picked up metformin prescription from the pharmacy, but just trying to get my head round how it will help.

Any experiences with this that you can share would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Jem.

Hi Jem, I was also put on metformin which I found strange given I'm not over weight. I went to a nutritionist who also said I wouldn't have any impact on fertility/ hormones unless I'm insulin resistant (he then explained about how insulin resistant impacts fertility but I can't really remember the details!)

He said that you can be IR and underweight/ normal weight and to see through taking the 'glucose challenge' test. He said if that and future blood tests indicate I'm actually not IR that he will consider speaking to my doc to reconsider. However my gynae said that studies have shown that metformin works well combined with clomid for slim people with pcos.

So in a nut shell I'm just as unsure as you and have I'm sure just added to the confusion! But just thought I'd share some of the opinions I've heard X

Hi Gina,

Thanks for your reply
:-)
Just wondering, any idea what metformin does to someone who's not insulin resistant?
Am going to start taking it tomorrow as figure if it's not for me I'll know soon enough. How's it working for you?

Thanks again!

No worries :)

My nutritionist said it shouldn't necessarily have any adverse effects if you're not IR, but I just hate the idea of adding another chemical to my body that it doesn't actually need.

I did get a natural period (first in 10 months) three months into taking it but can't say if it was def due to the metformin.
Some people get really ill on it but I was fine, although would say to build the dose up over a couple of weeks?

Would defo give it a try for a few months and see if there's any difference in blood test results?

Just to be clear. You can be insulin resistant but have completely normal blood glucose levels.

I was diagnosed after having done a fasting blood test. I fasted overnight and gave a blood sample in the morning. It showed that even though I hadn't eaten and my blood sugar was normal my insulin levels were way too high. It basically means my body constantly produces way too much insulin.
Diagnosed with PCOS 2008 after changing GP and finally seeing a Doctor that listened.
TTC since Oct 2010
Referred and prescribed Clomid May 2011 but didn't use it or take it further since moved to the USA.
Taking Agnus Castus, Oil of Evening Primrose, Fish Oil and Folic Acid.
Track with BBT and this shows I ovulate but at varying times.
Giving the natural route some time

Thanks both.
I didn't manage to convince my gp to run a fasting insulin test, just the standard blood sugar one, so yeah, blood sugar suggests I'm not IR, however I still could be. Instead of running this test to check, my gp was keen to prescribe metformin as next option. I'm on day 3 now, 500mg with breakfast. CD78, so will give it a while and see what happens.
After a lot of reading, I'm basically wondering if pcos (for me) hormone inbalance could be addressed higher up the chain by medicating adrenal support or supporting thyroid with T3 / T4 / TSH rather than only tackling insulin. My progesterone and testosterone are low and high respectively. Without test results for full thyroid and adrenal function plus IR it's rather impossible to know where the issue really is (could be everything, and fixing IR could fix the rest).

Anyways, giving metformin a go!

hi just seeing this.I was on metformin even before I was diagnosed diabetic. I was often borderline. I didn't notice a difference with my fertility (periods) until it actually developed into type II. Then I got 4 months of periods and my BFP last January.
Anyway the biggest thing I did wrong prior to being diagnosed was being a bit flippant with metformin. I didn't always remember to take it and I always wonder if that made a difference and why my borderline diabetes became actual diabetes.

Sorry rambling a bit. It never hurt me to take it...but do try t remember to take the correct doses everyday. Always remember to take it with food as you won't feel quite so rotten tummy wise that way. xxx

Thanks! i am on day 8 of taking 1 x 500mg at breakfast and for past 3 days have had an ache where I think my left ovary is. Especially painful early morning (it wakes me up), but eases when walking. Supposed to up it to 1000mg per day but not doing that til this pain eases (it's a little debilitating).

Only a quick reply as we have 3week old twins but my first baby was totally a metformin baby. My gp back then specialised in fertility and he advised it. I know it's effectiveness is questioned and the first time round it worked for me however this time it didn't. Stick with it, as long as it doesn't make you feel too yucky! When I fell on it I hadn't even managed to have a period for three months then fell pregnant without even having one! Hope this gives you some hope! Now back to baby bouncing! X

Soooo... I conceived while on metformin. Ov on 11th March. I wasn't as sick this time as I was early pregnancy with my happy healthy 3.5yr old son. 22nd April I miscarried. Confirmed by 2 hospitals as we were on holiday at the time. Feeling rather pessimistic and actually rather sad and a bit angry atm. Just started on metformin again, although not ttc in earnest as head's too scattered right now...
