My Yasmin Warning

Postby aarrbeee » Thu May 08, 2014 10:48 pm

Hi everyone

I would like to share my experience with Yasmin.

I was advised to take Yasmin from my Gynaecologist around 4 months ago. Fine, I said. I am going to be 31 next week, i'm overweight and I have PCOS (obviously!)

I wasn't at the time told about the high risk of possibly getting blood clots and even if I had been, I would never dream that something that serious would happen to me. I regret that now!

I have just come out of hospital after being diagnosed with having a Pulmonary Embolism. What started off as what I thought was a chest infection and a bit of breathlessness quickly deteriorated to me not being able to breathe and I was taken to A&E. After diagnosis, the specialist advised me that I had "multiple, extensive blood clots covering the majority of both my lungs"...quite serious stuff so i'm glad I ended up in the hospital when I did. After loads of test, a bout of pneumonia and catching a virus, they advised me that the cause of the clots was YASMIN!! I couldn't believe it! The very thing I had been recommended to take to make me better nearly killed me!

Needless to say, I am no longer on Yasmin, or any other contraceptive/combined pill and I don't intend to be again! The silver lining to this all is that I lost a stone in a week whilst in hospital and I have joined a weight loss group so have managed to keep it off. I've never been so scared in my life and it was totally the wake up call I needed to kick my butt into gear to try that little bit harder to lose weight.

I guess my moral to this story is: really research what the docs recommend and be sure you know of all the risks before you go ahead with it. Looking back I probably would have still taken it because you never think it's going to happen to you...but it did and funnily enough it has changed my outlook on everything! The fallout of this is that I now have to take Warfarin every day to disintegrate the clots (which comes with it's own problems which include bruising, nosebleeds and no alcohol!), my lungs are weak from the clots and pneumonia, so I tire easy and I still get breathless, i'm now signed off work until it gets better (which could be 6 months from now) and I have a strain on my heart (on the day I was admitted, my resting pulse was 139 and my oxygen was down in the 80s). All because I took Yasmin.

The ironic thing is, when I was sitting in the doctors complaining about breathlessness, the doc turned round and advised me of the risks of being on Yasmin and the whole time he was telling me about the risk of blood clots, (and me going, yeah that's okay...what are the chances?!) I already had the clots there!

I hope nobody else has had this happen to them, but would be interested to hear if anyone else has heard about this? After researching it when I got out of hospital, it appears that Yasmin and it's alternative coil is quite well known for causing clots...

I am so sorry to hear about what happened to you but glad you caught it when you did.

I was on Dianette when I started getting really bad varicose veins (I was only 18 or 19 at this time!). Of course, my NHS GP told me it was nothing to worry about but now at 26, they have worsened - just in my right leg - and I get very heavy and sore legs when it is hot. I read online that a pulmonary embolism can be a result if I don't keep exercising, wearing compression socks during long flights etc. I also take Daflon which is incredible and takes down the swelling and pain. Apparently there are different stages of Deep Vein Thrombosis and if I understand correctly the varicose vein is the first stage and the worsening of the veins relates to advanced stages with pulmonary embolism being a very severe stage. Have you been told about having DVT or did it just develop straight away into the embolism?

Hey Steph

Fortunately, after a Doppler on my legs, they confirmed that the clots didn't travel from my veins, they all formed in my lungs. Ive been off the Warfarin since November and I've not had any problems (apart from my lungs being pathetic and an abnormal breathing pattern - thanks Yasmin!)

They didn't say anything about watching out for DVT...
