getting worried

Postby fiona » Fri Sep 30, 2011 2:45 pm

I have had really bad bloating, constipation, diarrhea and cramps like I am getting a period for over a week now. Also waking up with headaches and feeling emotional. Its kind of like period pain but I just dont have the bleeding, does anyone else get this? Its awful!

Last time I had this for two weeks before my period, its so bad I can only wear baggy clothes, I fell all swollen in my tummy and boobs.

We are ttc but I keep taking tests and they say negative, also pretty sure we have not had sex during ovulation yet.

Its also quite painful, like a dull ache where my uterus is all the time

Any thoughts?

The symptoms you have got sound very close to the symptoms of IBS rather than your period due. Do you normally have these symptoms or is it just the last few weeks, is it every few weeks before your period? Have you been to your GP to get IBS ruled out?

yes I do have IBS, but this is lower doown and painful, radiating down legs like period pain.
I would also like to say that I do not believe in IBS as a diagnosis, IBS is a series of symptoms and that the cause should always be the first thing that is investigated.

Too many of us are fobbed off with an IBS diagnosis

Hi Fiona,

I've been partly 'diagnosed' with IBS, but only following seeing a gastroenterologist who performed a colonoscopy and taking a variety of blood tests to check for anything else more sinister. After finding nothing else wrong, he then suggested it was IBS and/or food(s) intolerances.

I was getting a lot of lower abdomen pain and constant bloating, which I initially thought was period related (although he did say that periods and IBS can sort of bring out the worst in each other, as my IBS is always worst around my period).

As for the ovulation tests, I am pretty sure they are fairly crap for women with PCOS since I was doing the tests myself and fell pregnant back in April/May and not once did I have a positive result from the ovulation tests. From what I understand, the best way to do this is 'charting' with temperature and checking your 'mucus' etc.. Am sure the gals in the TTC section are more about to advise though.

Anyway, have you had a referral to a gastro specialist? This might be a good start.. Although you need to be prepared for the investigations they will want to do, they are invasive and pretty unpleasant!

Good luck :)

Hi thanks for your reply.

I have had so may invasive procedures before getting my IBS diagnosis. One doctor couldnt believe that they didnt find anything as my symptoms were so severe. The next thing for me will be a laparoscopy but I am no sure if I can have this now that we are ttc.

I have had IBS for about 9 years and never have had this constant 'period cramp' feeling with it.

I now have a lot of CM which is creamy white at first then goes stretchy and clear and a bit watery. Maybe I am having ovulation pains but that wouldnt last for a week right?

Hiya,

I honestly don't know about ovulation pain - I think it's a bit of an unknown quantity. Some women say they feel it, others don't.. Hard to be sure, sorry!

With my 'IBS', which I've had some sort of variety of since my early 20's (now 32) I get flare up's from time to time and these feel like constant period cramps, and sometimes a throbbing/pulsating feeling on one side.

After the suggestion of it being a potential food intolerance, I did a lot of elimination checks with various foods (wheat, dairy, acidic/sour foods etc..) and have definitely come to the conclusion I react to certain foods quite badly - but this is especially noticeable if I am going through any life-stress/pressure. My mum was seriously ill a few months ago and as soon as I got the call from the hospital I was doubled up in lower down cramping 'IBS' pain for 2 weeks. When it happens I have to vastly reduce my diet to avoid all my trigger foods, or the pain is just constant.

I can't say of course this is what's happening to you, but it's an avenue worth considering certainly. I can eat the 'bad' foods, but in moderation and not when I am stressed.

I had a laproscopy when I was quite young as had abnormal cells from a smear result. I don't know about how it affects you if TTC - but if you're thinking something is wrong down there, perhaps it's worth getting it done anyway to ensure everything is healthy before having a bubba..? Have they said how long it affects TTC?
