I'm on 2000mg/day of metformin and not TTC. It was prescribed after referral to an endocrinologist though and not by my GP. I wasn't tested for insulin resistance at all but I am overweight and have a 'dirty mark' around my neck (which I only found out recently is a sign of insulin resistance...I just thought I had a dirty neck!).
I've been on it since about August and it does seem to be working. I've had 2 periods which are my first in well over a year so looking positive up to now.
Take care x
