Is there a test for insulin resistance?

Postby Laura616 » Thu Oct 28, 2010 11:33 am

I have had my blood tested once when i first got diagnosed over 18 months ago. I then took it uppon myself to have a diabetes test in the summer as i thought i had a few symptoms. (it was negative) It worries me though that i might have insulin resistance andf not be tested for it.
Sorry for reambling on and if you can help i would appreaictae it.

Hi
First of all thanks for answering,

I havent brought it up with my gp, i assumed (which is silly of me i know)that they would keep checking it! Is it the same thing as a dibetes test?
Will def ask next time i go!

Thanks again

hi Laura, I had the ordinary fasting blood tests coming back negative for years but carried on feeling unwell. Then after being diagnosed with PCOS in 2001 the advice from verity was to ask for a more in depth test called the or OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test).

My gp wasn't very supportive, so and I went privately and found a specialist with an interest in PCOS. She did the OGTT test which confirmed I have insulin resistance. The specialist recommended that I have the test every year to monitor it. When I saw my gp again, I think he was a bit embarrassed that I had to pay for a diagnosis and said I can have it done annually at our local hospital on the NHS.

So if you havn't had one yet, push your gp and maybe explain that you are concerned that ordinary fasting blood tests don't always show up the fluctuations when glucose is given.

Good luck, but hopefully you might have done this already

I asked my previous GP for a GTT and he said no as my fasting bloods were fine. I have just moved to a new area and am wondering if it is worth me asking.

I feel terrible all the time and I'm so tired, no matter how much sleep i have and i have cravings again even though i'm on metformin.

Do you think it's worth me asking?

Hi Emma, I would ask new gp if you are concerned, they might be a bit more supportive. Its quite frightening how many pre-diabetics are being told they are fine with the ordinary fasting blood test. But hopefully the OGGT will show your sugar levels are fine, but then at least you can eliminate IR. Good luck, take care Tina

Hiya

Don't know if you got this sorted by now or not but I know this sounds stupid but I'm a diabetic with insulin resitance, mine was picked up when i went to the endo the way they figured out was i had a skin tag. It looked like a dirty mark round where my chain was, i didn't even know a diabetic could get it. He took 1 look and confirmed it straight away. After a year and a half on metformin (2g) a day it is finally going :D

Defo push to see someone who actually knows what they are talking about and check for anything which looks like a tag.

Hope this helps

Hi Gema386,

I have skintags, one under my eye that was pink then turned brown, and I have one in my armpit. My GP refused to do a GTT. Do you think I should push for one?
