Postby bubblegum » Fri May 09, 2008 6:42 pm

hi I'm a new member (was a member a couple of years back). i have struggled with metformin for over 5 years now, i have had two children during this time. i have tried to control my weight without medication but recently its really started to creep back up and was advised by specialist to start metformin again. I'm really interested to know what doses all you guys are managing with? i take half a tablet in the morn and half at night, i seem to get really spaced out and get terrible heartburn.. any advice please?..... :?

I started on 500mg twice a day then increased to 500mg three times a day and now have just started on maximum dose of 2000mg of slow release version once a day.

Had stomach probs when first started and for few days after each increase but ok now.

Hope thing settle for you.

I take 2000mg a day. Fwiw, my sister was prescribed metforming, and couldn't tolerate it, and had to come off it.

I think I'll be going up to 4 x 500 mg soon, and I'm going to try taking the 4th one with my largest meal, so usually 1 at breakfast, 1 at lunch and 2 with my evening meal. Hope that works!

I had metformin a couple of years ago and felt awful on it, always felt sick and naueus on it and couldn't cope on it so came off it.

I have only just started taking medication again following a trip to the consultant as we are ttc, but because I reacted badly to it last time they have given my glycophage prolonged release tablets, which contain Metformin and so far I have had the odd stomach upset but no where near as bad as last time and I don't feel sick (so going to work is made alot easier!).

I am currently only on 500mg and next week will be increasing to 1000mg per day, followed by week 3 being increased to 1500mg per day. I am positive at the moment, yes it is isn't great to have side effects but this is better than last time so far!!

Newly Diagnosed...

Postby LATINA30 » Mon Mar 02, 2009 9:44 pm

Hi All,
hope your all ok,
I have just been diagnosed with pcos and given 500mg of metformin to start off going up to 1000mg in a weeks time, what kind of side affects can I expect and how long roughly can they last for I am really quite worried about it!

Any hints or tips greatly welcome

Hi I am meant to take 500mg 3 times a day but found it too harsh during the day so I take 2 tablets with a big glass of water a bit before bedtime and have been fine. I have now started ovulating on day 17 for 2 consistant months so seems to be working for me. Not sure if this helps anyone. ps this is my first post so hope its OK.
