Do I have PCOS?

Postby IzzyD07 » Thu Mar 13, 2014 10:07 pm

Hi, I'm new here.

I started my period when I was 14 which was quite late compared to all my friends. I had a perfectly normal first period and then... Nothing for ages. Six months later I had my second (and last) period.

Four months after my second period I got anorexia and dropped to a BMI of 13 very quickly (so of course I wasn't having periods then). However, since my periods technically stopped before I lost weight, I think I probably would have lost them anyway. I am 16 years old now and I haven't had a period in 2 years.

My BMI is between 16 and 17 now and I am continuing to gain weight but I am still not having periods. Everyone says that this is because I am underweight but I do think that there was something wrong with them even before I lost weight. My doctors are going to give me a pelvic scan when I reach a BMI of 18 so I guess I'll find out then.

Other than irregular periods, I do not have any other symptoms of PCOS. So what do you think? Is it normal to have a 6-7 month gap in between your first periods? Or do I sound like I have PCOS? Thanks in advance.

It is quite common when you first start your periods for it to be a bit hit and miss and lots of us on here have been told this is quite normal when we first had our periods, sometimes it can take a little while for your hormones to get in to sync, anorexia can cause havoc with periods so its quite difficult to know if your periods would have sorted themselves out to be honest. Keep going with the weight gain though, it will be tough going but you can do it. It is a terrible illness and can be difficult to overcome but stay strong.
